Any eBay sellers here?

topic posted Fri, March 18, 2005 - 1:30 AM by  fugitive247
After having an idle eBay account for several years, I finally took the plunge as both a buyer and a seller. The first few items I sold were gifts from out-of-state relatives that were of zero use to my family. This was like getting free money, and the rewards were much quicker than donating the stuff to charity and filing later for a tax deduction.

My most recent auction was experimental: one-time permanent logo/link placement in my blog. Aside from perhaps resizing an image and one simple little line of HTML, it's perhaps the easiest money one could make. Nothing to box and lug off to be shipped, no fuss, no muss.

I'm getting ready to start selling some nice handmade items like sterling silver earrings, hand knit/crocheted specialty accessories, and maybe some small, fairly inexpensive consumer goods that are often hard to find in certain areas of the U.S.

So, who else here sells on eBay? What do you sell? Had any weird or cool selling/buying transactions?

I've been selling on eBay for about a year on a really part time basis. Basically I just sold things that I owned, but didn't want to move to our new house (clothes, books, crappy Christmas presents).

My best transaction was for a Tinkerbell Clock that was a gift to me from one of my husband's friends. It was really girly and probably for a 7 year old. I know for a fact that he bought it at Walmart. I compared prices and listed with a starting bid of about $12 under what everyone else had it listed for with a "bin" equal to the other listings. The person that bought it "accidently" hit bin instead of bid (can you really do that with a bin?). I told him his bid was a contract and he either needed to follow thru or pay me the lost listing fees and fvf's. He paid. I was Tinkerbell Clock free.

Yes, indeed- BIN is, IMO, even more contractually binding than a bid that could end up being beaten by another potential buyer. Was the guy a total eBay newb or something? If he was, it could have been an honest mistake, but a sale is a sale in my book.

Now, if it had been some poor little old widow barely surviving on SS and her husband's meager pension I would have agreed to a mutual withdrawl scenario. Even though a sale may be a sale, KARMA is still karma!!! ;oD

    yup, I am a seller.
In fact I sorta of just sell on ebay and dont work.
I can admit I am not making a killing.
But I am paying my half of the rent for sure =)
My girl works full time and she pays her half so things are pretty smooth.

I just started with eBay in August(?) last year working for a powerseller on eBay.
I sold items for him and was paid no hourly, just 25% commission.
I made my own hours as I was a "contractor" who was paid weekly.
I actually made a lot doing this. More then his hourly shipping people.
I did not have to ship shit, just create listings for the crazy inventory.
That is a whole nother story

I started learning basic html and getting used to eBay.
After working for him for a few months I was damn good at making my items more desirable then any other current auctions or past completed auctions.
He started getting shady with commission and I was already selling my own items and sources on the side from home.
So I just bailed on him and became a seller from home in October.
And to my surprise just made powerseller last week! very exciting!

no real bad or weird experiences on eBay. Just one when I was buying.
But paypal got me a full refund and I still have the third world country generic item that was sent to me. Not as described at all.
    ------------------------------------------
I learned a tip then, create a BUYING account and a SELLING account.
    ------------------------------------------
I had 100% positive feedback, left him a negative for telling me to @*#) off and not refunding me.

He left me one for no reason. Did research and see he had tons of withdrawn feedback. Same situation. Anyways, after I got my full refund via paypal he made a request to withdraw.
So I am back at 100% positive and will never buy from my seller account again.
People suck. Dont let them ruin your selling reputation.

    p.s.
Yeah I am buzzed as fuck. Just got home, sorry I typed so much.
Had to run a spell check on that shit.

I have been a seller since Dec 04. I got into it big time right from the start and made power seller in March 05. Ebay just took away my power seller icon last week because my sales dropped below $1000.00 per month. I have 20 items listed now and need to make another 50 or so listings but I just haven’t had the time to do them all. I mostly sell items from my hobby shop but I think the most profit comes from items you have around your house that you don’t need or want.

I sell things occasionally. I started when my place of work got a basket of Star Trek memorabilia for a silent auction fundraiser and no on at the event wound up bidding on it. I broke the basket up and sold all the items on Ebay individually.

Once I found a whole bunch of books beside a dumpster...enough to fill the trunk of my car. As I went through them I discovered that one was worth quite a bit of money as it was a first edition of a rare book. I ended up selling it on Ebay for $130! Not bad for finding it in the garbage.

I sell alot of books on half.com. And for the ones that I'm not able to list there, I hope to have time to put up on Ebay soon.

I sell E-bay, too - mostly second-hand clothes - some vintage, some designer, some custom reconstruced .. plus, whatever i have around the house and in my closet that i don't need anymore (which is why I call my store Miggy's Closet :)

i've been doing it full time for a year this September - and i also must admit to being POOR! i work long hours and barely make my rent .. BUT .. i AM making rent, and am setting my own schedule - and i really do love shopping at thrift stores and re-doing and embellishing clothing - so for me, it's totally worth it :)

several months ago, i even opened my own e-bay store (because $.70-$1 fee per listing was KILLING ME) -

I had an ebay store for awhile, then dropped it when ebay raised the fees because I just wasn't turning enough of a profit. There are alot of sellers lately selling goods thru BIN at maybe a $5.00 mark up over wholesale. Absolutely ridiculous and it kills the market for everyone. So everyone makes less and has to list tons of auctions.

What I found with the ebay store, since your store items aren't listed in the regular auctions you get way less hits. I think to be really successful you need to do a lot of advertsing off of ebay.

I may start up again if I get laid off from my current job and have the time to list tons and tons of auctions.

i absolutely love ebay! I sold an eleven dollar shirt i got on discount a year ago, which was no use to me. Picture a sheer red polka dot shirt. I auctioned it off...& people bid up to 40 bucks on it. That's one of the items i am most proud of! I hate to buy though...even though i find it irresistable. I just sometimes get something of no use to me....but sometimes you find just what you're looking for for less money!

    I am a full-time seller :-):

    stores.ebay.com/Laura-Iverson-Gallery

I buy too, under a different ID.

I am an artist and it is still a thrill to me to see a new bidder (I've been selling on eBay over three years). So, that is the neatest thing.

I guess the worse thing is when I start bidding low, thinking something will bid up and it doesn't. So, if you do start selling your handmade jewelry, make sure you keep the starting price high enough that you won't cry if it sells for that.

eBay is a very unpredictable market. I've had paintings bid up 10 times the opening bid, and I've had them go for next to nothing. There are unexplainable lulls where nothing moves, then highs where everything does.

I tried to sell on ebay time and again, with no results. None. The market is just too saturated with people trying to make it into a career instead of what it was intended to be originally.

I will keep trying for a little while longer, but I may just have to stick to Craigslist.

I started selling about a month ago and will soon quit my job to do this full time.

I am selling rough opal as I live in Lightning Ridge Australia, home of the black opal.

So far I have been totally amazed at the prices I am getting.
It makes me feel guilty though I have been completely honest in my representation of the goods, so I put in some extra.

thus far buyers have been delighted with the goods.
Why didn't I do this years ago?

I have sold some ebay privately for myself such as cds, books, things a long those lines. For the past year I have been selling for the people I work for. It has been interesting. I started with jewelry for them-both costume and gemstones. Then we branched out to books, thimbles, dvds, and just about anything you can come up with. Recently I did auctions for an Antique Lily Thread display. I sold an antique coal iron and also an antique kerosene iron. The hardest thing I have had to work with those has been toy electric train items. Definitely not my cup of tea!!

Hey, all, I'm new to the group here, but not eBay. I started eBay on a whim when I saw a friend buying crystal minerals. I thought, I could sell off some of my book collection! I opened an eBay store and viola! I'm hooked. I really want to do this full time. I just don't think I'd make enough to compensate my current job.

Last December, while book selling was slow and I was in the need for extra cash, I started looking around the house for anything else I could sell off to pay the bills. I came across some old pottery "Tom and Jerry" punch bowl set. It was collecting dust and doing nothing for me so I thought I'd sell it. I researched the hell out of it, found out it was an old Royal Haeger piece. Tom and Jerry sets were making a bunch of money, along with Haeger pottery pieces. So I sold it for over $200. Nice. Then, in looking at other pottery pieces and glassware, I saw tons of things being sold that I see in thrift stores all the time. Things I could be buying for $1 at a thrift store, were selling for $30 to $100.

I began collecting Depression glass, art glass, pottery, and of course, books. Now my eBay store is FULL of stuff, with box after box of stuff not listed yet. I also have friends seeing me doing well and bringing me their things to sell.

So I currently market Depression glass, Vaseline glass, Art glass, Elegant glass, Pottery, Collectible figurines, Antique and vintage silver, first editions, rare editions, antique books and signed books.

      I love it.

Jan and Feb were terrible for me and on one message broad, women were talking about how terrible it had been for them also.

Glad to know that you are doing so well Jackal.

Thanks. Picking up on glass and pottery really helped fill in the gaps that books have during the winter months for me.

Well I managed to sell off all 6 of the consigned Hummels last night. Now if I can only get my butt in gear I have some 100 items of glassware, green glowy depression glass, pottery and an antique bottle from 1898 England, that I have to write listing for tonight. I have to fit this in among shopping more "dead old lady sales" (estate sales) this morning and my current stuff ending tonight. UGH.

I think between my eBay whoring and my regular job I work probably 80 hours a week. I just wish I had the money to show for it, LOL.

I just started selling on eBay (and I also am the newest member of this tribe). I'm liquidating a lot of my toy collection -- much of which I picked up a few years ago on eBay as a buyer. So far it's a bit of a mixed bag, but my current round of items seems to be on track. Only 21 of 59 items have bids at this point but nearly 30 of the unsold items have watchers, most of those multiple watchers. And some of the items with bids have a lot of watchers too, so hopefully the snipers will throw in their offers as the time runs down...

Weird to see what gets attention though. I thought Simpsons would do pretty well. It does, but only about a third of the views that Dukes of Hazzard generates... And Dukes gets lots of watchers too. Maybe they ought to remake the show, not that I'd watch it.
